This camp is a great experience for those already in love with the debate formats they have learned.
INTERESTED IN EXPLORING NEW FORMATS OF DEBATE?
There are various styles of debate, yet many debaters never get the chance to learn them, missing out on tons of amazingly fun and challenging tournament opportunities. This camp will focus on Public Forum (“PoFo”) and Lincoln-Douglas (“LD”), as well as Individual Events (“IE’s”).
PUBLIC FORUMPoFo is a very popular format that looks at current event topics, which will frequently be offered at tournaments when Parli is not taking place. This newest format of debate introduces research and “crossfire” into the debate round. Debaters know the topic BEFORE the tournament takes place; They may prepare both the affirmation and negation of the topic. Crossfire is similar to a cross-examination period, giving the opportunity to question the opposing team. PoFo simplifies some of the complexities of Parli, making it quite easy to learn; yet it offers a great breadth to explore, with a significant depth for experienced debaters to challenge themselves. |
LINCOLN-DOUGLASLD is a well established one-on-one format using cross-examination, often referred to as a “value” debate. Topics will commonly explore questions of justice, morality and how society ought to be. Debaters seek to compare two values and establish who should win the round. Topics are generally known far in advance and debated for 3 - 4 month at a time. LD permits use of any research prepared prior to the round. Debaters will have a deep understanding of the subject matter, often leading to several interesting philosophical points of view on the topic. There are several rule changes due to the research and being a one vs. one event. |
INDIVIDUAL EVENTSIE’s are speaking competitions from the “Speech” side of “Speech & Debate”, which go hand and hand with debate. IE’s offer skills helpful with performances, class presentations and of course Debate. We will introduce students to Impromptu, Extemp and Interpretive Debate Events, including Duo. This will give them the skills, to compete in these amazingly fun and challenging events at the many IE Tournaments. |
